Children's Marathon Challenge

There were 602 children from 36 Otago primary schools who participated in the inaugural "Children's Marathon Challenge". These children had accumulated 40km over the preceding 8 weeks and completed the final 2.195kms at Logan Park. Children came from as far north as Palmerston, as southerly as Waihola and as far west as Strath Taieri ( Middlemarch ). Suzie Bates, a dual New Zealand representative in cricket and basketball was the "guest starter". The children ran around the perimeter of Logan Park and finished inside the Forsyth Barr Stadium. As the children ran into the stadium they, along with their watching parents could watch the runners on the giant video screens. At the end of the "marathon" the children were congratulated by Suzie Bates, Mark Dickel ( Otago Nuggets ) and Kerri Bush ( Sport Otago ) and given an apple provided by " Veggie Boys ". The race was organised to finish in time before the start of the Cadbury Moro Half Marathon run and walk. Feedback from teachers and princpals has been positive with many indicating their support for 2013.

" You and your club need to be congratulated for a very successful event. All pupils involved this year would be keen to do the same next year. Well done " Faye Elliott, Acting Principal, Pinehill School.
